School of Foreign Languages, Nanyang Institute of Technology, was established in March, 2000. Being renamed as the School of Foreign Languages in November, 2011 under the continuous development of the Institute as well as the Department, it started its daily teaching work thereafter together with the Teaching Unit of Public Foreign Languages, which was founded during the same period.
The School of Foreign Languages currently offers two course options, English and Japanese, atundergraduate level. The Teaching Unit of Public Foreign Languages shoulders all the teaching duties of College English of the Institute. We enjoy a teaching team with a reasonable structure, fairly meticulous teaching method, good teaching skills and research abilities.We currently have a faculty of 87 people with 75 full-time teachers, among which 18 are professors (including associate professors) and 75 are lectures. 75 of the teachers have obtained doctoral or master’s degrees. On top of that, we have also employed 10 foreign teachers (7 English teachers and 3 Japanese teachers).
There are 8 teaching and researching departments in the School: Fundamental English, Business English, Language & Culture, IELTS, Japanese, College English I, II & III; and a Comprehensive Innovation Training Centre for College Students. We undertake several nationwide examinations, namely TEM-4, TEM-8, BEC, NECCS, andthe Japanese-Language Proficiency Test for Henan Province. We also offer outsource services such as English-Chinese and Japanese-Chinese translation and training.
In terms of experimental teaching, we have launched the Foreign Language Learning Experimental Centre. It now encompasses a practical training room of integrated skills for business foreign languages, 11 languagelaboratories (including 1 multifunctional oral training room), 5rooms forindependent learning,and 1FM launch center. It has more than 500 computers and more than900 pronunciation practicing equipmentwith a total asset of over 7.3 million RMB. Advancedforeign language network teaching facilities and abundant teaching resources provide the students with a state-of-the-art foreign language learning environment.
In recent years, we have achieved excellent results in publishing papers and monographs, as well as initiating scientific research projects. Staff in the School of Foreign languages have also published a number of academic papers of high quality. We have accomplished 26 projects at the provincial level, 17 projects at the municipal level. 7 projects at the provincial level and 6 projects at the municipal level have been approved. 110 papers have been published, among which 46 were published in CSSCI journals. Our staff have edited or co-edited 15 textbooks and published 3 monographs. We have won 2 second prizes and 1 third prize in the“Excellent Achievement Award of Social Science in Henan Province.”
There are now more than 600 students in the School of Foreign Languages on campus from more than 20 provinces and municipalities throughout the nation. We have always been attaching great importance to the building of a superb teaching and learning atmosphere, and the working concept of“human-orientation and all-rounded development.” We have always been giving priority to talent cultivation among other jobs. We have a rigorous and scientific student administrative system, an ideological education of various forms, and student activities withprominent features. The teaching and student cultivation quality has developed continuously and has witnessed a remarkable effect. Graduates are with solid professional knowledge and are deeply favoured by employers.
During the process of developmentin the past decade or so, the School of Foreign Languages has insistedon reform, innovation, and progression. It has constantly improved the teaching quality of higher education and the research level, and has made great contributions to the Institute as to foreign language teaching and the construction of foreign language as a discipline. The School has won many honourable titles, such as the“Heroine Staff Model Unit” of Nanyang,“5 Merits Party Organization” of NIT,“Civilized Unit of NIT,” and many others. There are also many excellent individuals among the teaching staff. Some of them have won the“Medal of Labor” in Nanyang, titles like“One of Ten Eminent Women in Nanyang,” “Heroine Model” of the Institute,“Excellent Teacher,” “Excellent Party Member,” and many other honours.
